Archive for December, 2008

2008 has been a blast for us. We launched MarketingHackz first and then Nethackz and both blogs went off the roof in few short months. We knew we could make it happen but it sure did exceed our expectations. We launched Nethackz in June and since then we have come a long way. You guys have been a constant source of inspiration for us to grow and without you, our readers, we wouldn’t exist. One of the things that really hit us hard on 2008 was being listed on autobury on digg. Everyone knows that Digg is a “traffic house” and we certainly hit it hard when we first started and after that BAM! we were out of picture. We tried a couple times after that just to make sure and confirm and I think it is confirmed that we have been put under autobury but then again its Digg, you never know what the deal is.

Getting banned from digg although hurt us a little, it opened up other opportunities. We moved from focusing creating articles solely for traffic and turned Nethackz more into a tech info blog and since then we have been rolling like a powerhouse. The subscriber numbers have grew and we have been mentioned by BBC. That certainly was the highlight of 2008 for us. There are not a whole lot of blogs that can say they were mentioned by BBC’s editorial team within such a short amount of time and we are proud that we can :) .

While we say goodbye to the year 2008, we would like to thank all our readers and especially Jason for bringing us all together by creating a platform for us. With each post and each comment we get a little closer to building a community and with over 300 posts the Nethack staff have certainly worked hard in keeping this blog going.

We wish you a very Happy New Year. We hope to see you around next year. Have fun, party hard and throw the keys before you start drinking. If you lose the key you can always get a new one. Be safe out there and we will wait for you in 2009.

See you in 2009! Happy New Year

Sony’s XEL-1 OLED TV was awarded grand award as the innovation of the year in the entertainment category by PopSci. This television by Sony also happens to be the world’s first OLED TV. Cell phones have evolved in the past decade from simple communication devices to mini technologial powerhouses, so is it really a surprise to learn that they might become even more interactive? This week, Microsoft Research will present a paper detailing two new methods for cell phone’s to transmit information: a hand-rubbing device that works by moving a small ball or nub back and forth and a finger-tapping contraption that uses a tiny “hammer”.

So why would anyone want to be caressed by their cell phone? According to the paper’s authors, the rubs and taps could be useful for family members wanting to exchange quick messages about common daily events— for example, a hand rub could signal “I’m on my way home from work.”

Still, I’m not so sure that this idea will take off— the researchers noted that their rubbing technique couldn’t generate enough pressure to feel natural, and I wouldn’t enjoy a strange electronic sensation every time someone decides to contact me. Regardless, the research does hint at future possibilities for cell phone communication.

Religion and technology can be quite a good mix for people that are religious and tech savvy. iPhone of course is the “hip” gadget for tech savvy at the moment and now religious people can make use of it for religious purposes as well. An iphone application called iBreviary developed by Rev. Paolo Padrini and Dimitri Giani is the app that has been endorsed by Vatican which is available in US and Europe for 99 cents at the Apple store.

Seems like Pope is starting to get into technology and make his organization more tech savvy. I guess he is even “down” with using IM acronyms and such while sending text messages. This is what Monsignor Paul Tighe, secretary of the Vatican’s Pontifical Council for Social Communications told the AP,

The Catholic Church is learning to use the new technologies primarily as a tool or as a mean of evangelizing, as a way of being able to share its own message with the world.

This is a pretty neat service! As usual on my quest to find something out of the ordinary and useful I came across this site mosio which lets you text a question using your mobile phone and you can get upto four answers. Yes, you do have friends and families to help you out with your queries but I can bet they don’t know answers to all the questions you have.

These questions are answered by real people who are referred to as QnAgents. You might think the service is pretty silly as you can have answers through google mobile and other app but as far as I know google mobile wont help you answer ” What is the most beautiful country in the world?”, yeah its silly but sometimes its just plain fun. Think of having an argument with a friend or a colleague and nobody can help you answer the question, this is when Mosio service comes in handy.
Before you can use this service you will have to check if this service is available for your phone. I have my service through Sprint so it was available and as far as I can see they have all the major carriers so you shouldn’t have a problem. Here is the link to test your phone, test my phone
To try it out text a question ( anything ) to qna@mosio.com and get 4 free answers by real people. Let me know through your comments how your experience was, as for me it was fun and its just another service that I learned about. Ohh and it also works with Twitter.
