I spend most of the day sitting behind a computer.  Even though gas prices are down, who knows when they will go back up…  I used to use GoToMeeting software – which was really nice.  It’s just that $50 a month gets a little expensive when you go through a couple months in a row that you don’t use it much.

A good friend of mine, John, pointed me to Dimdim.  Dimdim is entirely web based.  You manage your web conferences inside their admin panel with nothing to download.  You can host meetings, join meetings or schedule events.

For the true technophile, they have a compiled version of the web conference hosting software that lets you keep all the stuff on your own server.  That’s nice for someone like me how tries to keep as much data in-house as possible.

I’ll probably mess around with the Dimdim open source edition this weekend – but until then have fun with the free conferencing!

Over the holidays, I decided I needed a break.  After starting various businesses and websites, I hadn’t had a ‘vacation’ in probably three years.  Some people get excited about going to Disney World or the Swiss Alps – but I was just excited that I could turn my Blackberry off for more than a weekend…

On Christmas Eve, I found an interesting service called AwayFind.  It’s basically a contact page that lets people get in touch if they really need you…  It’ll do SMS, email and the like – but it is totally unintrusive.

After close to a month of using the service, I have to admit I feel much better about how and when people get ahold of me.  I don’t feel like I’m tied to a ‘connected’ device and I don’t feel panicked by having an inbox of emails.

But more to the point, I can walk away from my desk and still feel in control of what’s going on.  Check it out and let me know what you think!

We found a video that shares the secret history of Silicon Valley. Please be advised that the video is over an hour so you might need a good chunk of time to watch the entire video,

Not that you are a couch potato but if you love watching TV and especially if you are one of those who constantly likes to flip channels, here is something for you – Hillcrest Labs’ Loop motion-sensing remote. This remote pretty much works like Nintendo Wii Remote, in fact they sued Nintendo last year over Wii controller patents. Through a combination of sensors and accelerometers, the remote senses the users’ movements and reflects them on the screen. Users can click on the right or left button to then make selections.

The design of the remote looks pretty sleek and it certainly gets by with less buttons than the remote controls that we are used to seeing. Check out the video below to see if it might be something you might want in the near future, (please note that the video is from 2007 when Hillcrest Lab first introduced it but it seems like they will be releasing it sometimes soon.)

I have long been a Palm user. My current phone is a Palm 750wx and for some reason I feel a little out of loop when it comes to being “hip” and mobile productive. Palm has been beaten to death lately by other mobile handsets but looks like Palm is back in the game with its latest phone Palm Pre. Everyone knows about “The Richter Scales.” They performed at the Crunchies 2008 and they totally nailed it once again. In their performance they talk about podcasting, cuil, twitter, yahoo, google ohh and they pick on Jerry Yang, former Yahoo! CEO as well which is always fun to see. The funniest part of the show is at the end when they change the name of the popular tech blogs/sites into a porn domain,

TechCrunch = Sex Crunch
GigaOm = GigaMoan
VentureBeat = VentureMeat
SilliconAlleyInsider = SiliconValley Inside Her
