How crazy is this? I had heard for years that Google was buying up all the ‘dark fiber’ in the country so that it could pipe Internet to residential areas… But gigabit speeds? That’s awesome.
Could Google be your next ISP? Maybe. The company has just announced a trial of its own high-speed network that it plans to offer to “at least 50,000 and potentially up to 500,000 people.”
Google says it will be capable of delivering speeds more than 100x faster than typical U.S. Internet connections with up to one gigabit per second. It will do so at a “competitive” price.
If you are a big Gmail fan and someone who needs to be constantly reminded what needs to be done, then this might be something for you. As we all know Gmail Labs consistently comes up with something new to make their users happy. This time they have come up with a “to-do-list” which is integrated in Gmail. It is called “tasks” and allows you to add reminders and well things-to-do.
This is helpful for people that are heavy Gmail users. I am not very big on gmail for some unknown reason. I am not sure why I didn’t get into it as much like everybody else. Yeah go ahead and count me out from the cool kids bunch .
To activate the “tasks” on gmail, follow these steps :
Sign in to your gmail account
On the top right hand side click on “setting”
Click on that tab that says “Labs”
Enable Tasks and click save changes
The task link sits right under contacts on the left sidebar. To start using it simply click on it and you will have your own to-do-list on gmail.
There has been many ventures google has undertaken but haven’t been able to produce any results with them. Lively falls under that category. Google’s browser based virtual world that can be embedded into other websites is joining the deadpool.
Lively was launched in July of 2008 and the initial reaction was quite overwhelming. Although Lively is going down the crapper we do need to give Google credit for the risks they take. That is what business is all about. Giving everything a shot and weed out anything that doesn’t work. And at this point in time Lively seems to be one of the ventures that didn’t really go as Google planned.
Here is an excerpt from the Google Blog ,
Google has always been supportive of this kind of experimentation because we believe it’s the best way to create groundbreaking products that make a difference to people’s lives. But we’ve also always accepted that when you take these kinds of risks not every bet is going to pay off.
If you are a lively user and have worked hard to create your world on lively, Google suggests that you take snapshots and videos that will remind you later of all your hard work.
Although Google is primarily seen as a search engine company their services are certainly not limited to just search engine market. They have such a wide array of services that at times it is simply hard to even remember or apply. The other day while I was on Twitter, I clicked on a link that so happened to be one of the best resources compiled by google for its users. I am not sure how long this has been around or if it is something Google recently released, but one thing for sure, this link is an ultimate resourcs for anyone thinking of using google’s other services besides search.
Please click on the image below to see what I am talking about…..it definitely is one of the best compiled resources, Google just knows how to tap into their market .
Google decided to go back in time and released their oldest available index which dates back to 2001. If you don’t find your site indexed don’t worry as the indexing is from 2001 and not current. Please click the image below and give it a shot,
Lately there have been a lot of things sprouting on the web that I am simply falling in love with. I am not a heavy Craigslist user but still at times I tend to use it for some things that I want. However, the extensive clicking and scrolling sometimes just makes the work a little too hard for me. Search All Craig’s List is a new tool that eliminates this hassle. It allows you to search anything that is listed on Craigslist. It sure is a handy way to tap into the massive listing that exists on Craigslist. I am sure I will be using Craigslist a lot more often since this service will definitely make it a lot easier to find listings.
Its amazing how often we hear about google in news. Its either some groundbreaking update on an existing service, a new product/service launch or acquisition, Google is never seems to get a break from technology news. Its once again time for Google to acquire another web property from the way it sounds.
We have come to find from different sources that Google might be acquiring Valve which is known for its Half-Life games and Steam, a content distribution platform which Valve uses to sell and distribute games. Google seems to be trying to tap into the gaming market as well as the acquisition might best fit them for that matter. As of this point its a rumor but usually when Google rumors go around it happens to be true. And when it comes to acquisitions Google sure as hell seems to be getting quite a few of them each year. Its a wait and see thing at this time.
For a complete timline and acquisitions please refer to this link Google’s Acquisitions.
Well, for most of us web junkies the wait finally came to an end a couple hours ago. Google gave us quite a surprise with Google Chrome. Although there were rumours that google has been cooking up a sweet browser somewhere in its lab, it had never been announced officially. Well, the time came and google chrome is now available for all to taste.
So what do I think of Google Chrome? I am not sure if my opinion really matters to most of you but what the heck….I think google is headed in the right direction with this browser. There are a lot of features that are pretty cool. But the simple design with this browser is kind of an eye sore, at least for me. Besides the minimal design the other thing I have a problem with is that it doesn’t support any add ons. And trust me, I am an add on junkie. Anything I can get my hands on gets added to my FF browser. That certainly won’t be the case with Chrome cause the damn thing won’t let me add anything. All in all I like the browser so far but it won’t replace my default FF for a while until google allows me to add plug ins. Anyways, enough of my opinion, there is not much to say. I have compiled some interesting links below regarding google chrome that you guys might want to check out : Read the rest of this entry
This is freaking creepy. I was just going through my normal digg dose for the day looking for cool stories to check out and I came across this video made by The Vacationeers. This probably will never happen and am pretty sure it won’t ( fingers crossed ), but what if it does? This particular video just points out the power of google and how it might effect our life in future and what google might be capable of.
Seriously, this is pretty mind boggling. Check it out,
