When I first started blogging, the Internet was daunting. There’s just so much information out there, how was one person seriously supposed to get through it all. Then, web 2.0 was just starting to take off. Internet Apps like salesforce.com were just starting to get popular. Myspace was growing and Facebook and Youtube hadn’t even been created. How could I get through all the garbage that makes its way into my feed reader?
The answer is simple. I didn’t.
Six months into blogging, I discovered that I was spending 12 hours a day devouring news, product launches, the most recent web developments, and everything else. Divide that 74 hours a week into only $20 or $30 I was making a month on my first site - and I was getting crushed hourly.
So what did I do? I revamped my approach. I used better web tools to get the job done. Here’s how.
3 Steps To More Sane, More Profitable Blogging
- Hacking Your RSS Feed Reader - Take 20 minutes and clean out your feed reader. I can almost guarantee that 75% of the sites you have subscribed to aren’t something you read on a daily basis. And if NetHackz is one of them, then cut us out too. You need to be more productive with the time you spend in front of a computer, not worried that you are going to miss something… Because you won’t. The Internet is revolving. There is nothing you can read that hasn’t been said somewhere else.
- Find a ‘Read it later’ application you like - A Read it Later app basically lets you tag a web page as something you want to read later. For instance, if you see an article on TechCrunch that looks interesting but you are at work and getting ready for a meeting - you just tag it in the application and it spits it back to you when you have time. Two I like are Readbag and the Read It Later Firefox plugin. Personally I prefer Readbag because it syncs it up across all your computers because it is actually hosted online.
- Use Voice to Text, Audio and Video - Voice to text might sound daunting, but it isn’t at all. I love the voice to text application, Jott, because I can blog or leave myself notes right through my cell phone. They get transcribed and email right to my inbox. And best of all, it’s free! I have the J programmed on my blackberry to speed dial the service, and that’s it!Audio and Video is a bit more difficult, but it lets you communicate a ton of information in a short amount of time. I recently picked up a Flip video camera which provides a seemless way to do video podcasts. You record, attach to your computer, and upload! It’s absolutely beautiful..
After you employ these three tips, take the money you make blogging and divide it by the total hours you worked. I guarantee you will be making more. And most likely, you will be more sane - which will lead you to blogging better! Not to mention, your family might actually like you :0)
