Twitter – A Perfect Outlet To Distribute Malware

by Ritu

Most of us know about twitter and the potential it has in terms of networking, marketing and a whole lot of other things. As everything else, Twitter is starting to see manipulation of its wonderful service. We constantly see people spamming Twitter but it has now taken a different route. Twitter is now being used to distribute malware.

A Twitter profile lately has been sending out links which attracts users to click the link by luring them to see a porn video of some Brazilian star. When users click on this link they actually end up downloading a virus.

Here is what Karpersky Lab’s Dmitry Bestuzhev had to say regarding this malware,

This profile has obviously been created especially for infecting users, as there is no other data except the photo, which contains the link to the video.

If you click on the link, you get a window that shows the progress of an automatic download of a so-called new version of Adobe Flash which is supposedly required to watch the video. You end up with a file labeled Adobe Flash (it’s a fake) on your machine; a technique that is currently very popular.

In reality, this is a Trojan downloader that proceeds to download 10 bankers onto the infected machine, all of which are disguised as MP3 files.

This is a good indication that we need to check who the links and information are coming from before we go ahead and follow them.

The distribution of malware via Twitter has begun!
